HISTORY OF THE TRNC

The Forefront: Cyprus documentary series from TRT World unravels the island's turbulent past, from the Bloody Christmas of 1963 to the Turkish operation, covering decades of inconclusive negotiations. In just six episodes, stories of division and resilience will unfold. The Cyprus conflict is one of the longest-running disputes in modern history.

Episode 1: Seeds of Hatred

In the first episode of this six-part documentary, we go back to the beginning and explain why. The Forefront: Cyprus Seeds of Hatred tells the story of how the Turkish and Greek Cypriots came into conflict in the first place.

Episode 2: Resistance

In the second episode, we see how the Erenkoy settlement became a symbol of Turkish Cypriots resistance after the "Bloody Christmas" in 1963.

Episode 3: Peace Operation

The year 1974 has been the turning point for the Cyprus conflict. Turkish troops were ready to intervene on the island and help the Turkish Cypriots who were in despair after the Greek coup. And nothing has remained the same since. In the third episode, Peace Operation, we delve into the details of the 1974 operation with expert views and first-hand accounts of the war.

Episode 4: Tug of War

After the Turkish military operation in 1974, the island of Cyprus became a diplomatic battleground. The island entered into a negotiation period which has lasted nearly half a century. The Forefront: Cyprus: Tug of War explores the twists and turns, including what was at stake for Turkish and Greek Cypriots.

Episode 5: The Annan Plan

Years of negotiations have failed to reunify Cyprus, its history marked by persistent challenges in reaching a comprehensive solution. In 2002, a significant development took place with the introduction of the Annan Plan, a peace proposal put forward by then-UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots returned to the negotiating table with renewed hope.

Cyprus: A path to a two state solution (from: Freedom and Fairness for Northern Cyprus)

The history of Cyprus is too often told by those wanting to whitewash it for political purposes. This film explains the true history of the island, and the conditions that led Turkish Cypriots to establish the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in 1983. This 50 year frozen conflict can only be brought to its conclusion by considering bold, new proposals. Attempts to reunite the island as a bi-zonal federation have repeatedly failed. Now is the time for fresh ideas. Now is the time for a two state solution for Cyprus.

The Side of Cyprus Nobody Talks About

In May 2024, ‪@AbuFiniin‬ and ‪@noplaybookprod‬ from the KOTC team ventured into the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus—a de facto state in the northern part of Cyprus, recognised only by Turkey.
Over three days, they immersed themselves in the culture, from intense football derbies (Yaşa Fenerbahçe!) to thrilling car rallies, and even secured an interview with the President. Our one-hour feature documentary captures it all.
The situation in Cyprus is both delicate and complex, but our aim was to hear directly from Turkish Cypriots (who are pro independence), unfiltered and raw. The Cyprus story isn't black and white; it's filled with nuance and shades of grey. Understanding multiple perspectives is crucial for progress. This documentary offers a side of the story many haven't heard.
