GOOD CAUSES - SOS  21 Aug 2025

BRS AND FREEMASONS JOIN TO FUND NEW STAIRCASE FOR SOS TRNC

Teenagers living in a care facility in Kyrenia have been guaranteed safer access to their living accommodation thanks to the combined efforts of the British Residents Society and the Bellapais Lodge Freemasons.
The accommodation, at SOS Youth House in Kyrenia has been undergoing a series of renovations to improve living conditions for the teenagers and young adults residing there.
As part of its good causes' initiative, the British Residents Society agreed to support the project and have raised more than £2,000 toward the fabrication and installation of a new external steel staircase linking the floors on the sites' oldest accommodation block.

BRS committee member Chris Martin led the fundraising drive on behalf of SOS and said BRS members donated to the project during the Society's 50th anniversary gala ball.
He said: “We would like to thank all our members who donated so generously at the gala ball. The BRS good causes initiative allows us to give back to our adopted community and we are delighted to be able to pay for this vital piece of infrastructure for such a worthwhile charity which provides support to the most vulnerable in our society.”

Chris became aware of the need for help at the Youth Houses through his wife Heather, who volunteered at the site with fellow British expats, Caz Franks and Juliet Whitfield. They have been the driving force behind a series of building and room renovations at the SOS children's houses in Lefkosa and Girne and have raised over 1M TL to fund these projects over the last three years.
Mark Ryan, Worshipful Master of the Bellapais Lodge Freemasons, who donated €500 to the staircase, said: “It is great to be able to donate to this worthy cause. The members of the Lodge work very hard to raise funds for worthy local charities.”

Queens Platinum Jubilee  2 Jun 2022

On 2nd June, in ‘The Garden' of ‘The House' in Kyrenia, the British Residents Society and The Royal British Legion (Kyrenia Branch) combined to hold a memorable celebration of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee.

For 70 years, she has led the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth with dedication and distinction, earning a place in history that may never be repeated.

The newly elected BRS Chairman Julian Mawdesley welcomed the guests and the event commenced with the march on of 3 Standards- The Union Flag, The RBL and Cyprus Police ( Kim Tyler, Con Graham and Bill Clark). This immaculate display set the scene for a fine celebration.

The National Anthem recorded from the Queen's Coronation in 1953 followed with the nearly 300 attendees joining in the singing.

Sir Michael Graydon ( RBL Kyrenia President) reminded the audience of HM's extraordinary service over the 70 years and the esteem in which she is held around the world. He described her commitment to her armed forces and her sense of humour.

Jubilee

During the celebrations the Organisers received two messages of good will that were read out to those present. The first was from President Tatar who congratulated Her Majesty the Queen on her Jubilee and appologised that he could not attend due to urgent Government business. The second was from The British High Commissioner, Stephen Lillie who had seen some of the “Live” pictures from the RBL. He sent his best wishes for the Jubilee and could see that everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves at the event.

The formal part of the celebration concluded with rousing rendition of ‘Rule Britannia'  ‘Jerusalem' and ‘Land of Hope and Glory' which brought everyone present to their feet waving the Union Jack in tribute to a much loved and respected Monarch.

Julian Mawdesley (BRS) and the Acting Chair of the RBL, Kyrenia branch Jean Bradley thanked the staff of the House who had gone “Above & beyond” to provide an incredible service to help make the event special.
